] So just as a random speculation: assuming he did not know her age, would he have proposed to her if he had known that she was older than him?
I beleive at the beginning of P&P Bingley is about 21 and Jane is about 23, which would be the same age difference.
("Mr. Bingley had not been of age 2 years, when he was tempted by an accidental recommendation to look at Netherfield House". So if "of age" means 18, he was only 20 at the start of the book.)
