On the other hand he would have been relieved, no need to fight anymore against his social convictions. I believe that if Fitzwilliam and Lizzy had married Darcy wouldn't have visited them very frequently. It would have been quite ironical, a mere commoner rejecting her on account of her social status and an earl's second son asking her to be his wife!
