That he went there! He wouldn't have risk his going otherwise! His inner fight takes place before he arrives at the rectory, throught all his stay at Rosings (that is why he keeps postponing his departure). He is unsettled because it is the first time he acts against his convictions! He does not propose on the spurr of the moment!
If he had doubted he would have taken himself away, ie the "Binbley proceeding": out of sight...
