I like Fanny, and I think JA liked Fanny, but I agree that she is just a bit insipid. It's also hard to forgive her for being, not just pained and distressed, but critical in a rather superior way, of her harassed mother's household at Portsmouth.

CS Lewis (as usual) nailed it for me in his essay on Jane Austen, which I quoted here some weeks ago, but it's probably gone where dead messages go.
