arcy would rather have planned the whole proposal situation out carefully- (it's who he is), if not perhaps the timing. He did love her and he wanted to get it right, I'm sure. We all know how fastidious he was! I'm sure that a lot of weighing up of pros and cons must have gone into it first- he was marrying a woman so far "beneath him", of course. I think he knew the time to propose was coming. And he did ask her all those questions about Mr Collins and Charlotte's marriage.

Think of the proposal in this context:

  1. The two of them have been in one another company daily since Darcy first appeared at church
  2. Darcy hears Elizabeth is indisposed and will not drink tea with the party that evening
  3. Darcy visits the rectory when he knows no one else will be there

Darcy goes to see Elizabeth simply because he must see her daily. She has become both object and dhabit with him. Darcy may not understand the depth of his own emotion, especially since he is used to being in charge of things. He, the most passionate of al of JA's heros, is overtaken, he doesn't like it but he cannot fight it. Darcy has lost controll. Poor dear.
