When I was 11, I loved "Jane Eyre" and had already read all of the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Another idea is "A Wrinkle in Time" bu Madeline L'Engle.
That would not be too "girly" for your nephew. (kids have to rescue their Dad). There is also "Anne of Green Gables" and that entire series. Good luck.
