Your comments fit right in with what I have been thinking about the difference in Charlotte's "choose-first-ask-questions-later" approach to marriage and Elizabeth's "determine-his-character" approach. We are told of these very early on in the book, so it should be of no surprise when Charlotte, very pragmatically, went after Mr. Collins. And then we get the treat of watching Elizabeth determine the true character of Mr. Darcy. Starting at Rosings, with the letter, through Pemberley, then the Lydia affair, Elizabeth understands who Darcy is. I know this teeters on the brink of the "when did she know" question, but she didn't actually decide that she wanted to marry him until she fully understood, appreciated and respected his character.
