Well, as for the two girls, I would suggest any of the books put out by Pleasant Company (the American Girls Collection), even though they aren't really "classics". There are six different sets now, I believe, and each is about an American girl of about 9 years of age who lived in a different time period: Felicity in 1774, Josefina in 1824, Kirsten in 1854, Addy in 1864, Samantha in 1904, and Molly in 1944. There are six books in each series (except for Josephina, as she is the newest and only has three books out now) and each has fun historical facts in it (and some fun follow-up history after the story, too). Each book isn't very long either, so it's not intimidating for beginning readers. In addition, bookstores like Barnes and Noble have "American Girl Nights" where fans of the books can come and talk about the books, participate in period activities, and learn more about American history. Oh, and there's an added bonus: Pleasant Company makes dolls that go along with the stories, with costumes and accessories and projects that all have some significance in the books. I don't mean to sound like an ad for these books, it's just that I (personally) really enjoy them and they teach much about American history in a fun way. Barnes and Noble, Borders, and many other bookstores carry these books, so you don't have to go through the Pleasant Company catalogue to see if these may be what you're looking for. But, if you are interested, here's a link that will take you to their website where you can request that a catalogue be sent to you. I sure hope you find what you're looking for and that your neices and nephew will really enjoy reading them! :-)
