I just had to throw in my 2 cents.
How about Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. It is a fabulous book, and very romantic. And falls into the Latin category.
As for Australian, A Town Called Alice by Nevil Shute. I don't know if the author is Australian, but a large portion of the novel is set in Australia. This is also a very romantic, WWII love story.
Both of these works have movies available on video. And both movie versions are very good, very faithful to the original text.
