In response to Boring slide nights?, written by Stolzi on December 03, 1997 at 11:41:10

] ] It seems from Lizzy's speech at the end of Chapter 27, that Jane Austen had been through the early 19C equivalent of too many boring slide nights... (do you have those in America?)

] The worst one I ever suffered was not in America, but at the home of the American Ambassador. Where you can't be rude and leave early.

] It was on the order of "Here is Aunt Tessy. Here is Aunt Tessy again, with the rhododendron. This is Aunt Tessy again, but I cut off the top of her head in this one." We staggered home about one a.m.

"Here is Bertha at the back of the house."

"Oooh yes, very nice."

"Here is Bertha coming around the side of the house."

"Mmm hmm....And who is that?"

"Oh, that's the Spanish Inquisition."

"I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition!"

(evil music)

"NO ONE expects the Spanish Inquisition!!!!!!"

That's from memory, so it's paraphrased quite liberally. Yes, Mark quotes Wordsworth from memory, I quote silly British television. A sad state of affairs, to be sure.....
