I agree that Fanny should not have badmouthed Mary or anyone else (1) it would have been completely out of character and (2) it would not have recommended her to Edmund. But although Edmund and Fanny are a good match, I still feel that he did nothing to earn her hand. I felt that he was again undervaluing her by assuming that she would marry him just because he asked. That was Fanny to a T ... she will do anything for anyone who is principled and kind to her. Edmund is both to Fanny, however, he forgets that *asking* for someone's hand implies a 50% chance of a negative reply.
Hmmm...that would make an interesting piece of fanfic? Title: Fanny gets a Backbone and Edmund a Surprise!
(This is, of course, all tongue in cheek!)
