] Names are sometimes in English and sometimes in Spanish. For instance, Charles Bingley is called first Carlos, and then Charles. Caroline is always Carolina. Sir Lucas' name is first in Spanish then in English The remaining names are always in English.
This gave me a silly idea. I read it in English but imagine what would have happened if they had translated all the first names in an old Dutch copy of the book. It would give me shudders!
Willem and Karel (Charles), yikes! Just about the most nondescript peasant names you can imagine....I would just refuse to read a book about a Willem and Karel.
And all the shortened versions they could make of the girls' names (the names are the same as in Dutch, except Jane and Mary)...Lizzy would maybe become Liesje....aarrrggghhh!!! I hated it when they called me that to annoy me.
