I guess you're right about the male world's interpretation of female politeness, but don't you think it is a pity that we have so lost touch with the rules of pilteness?
Courtesy is a set of rules can constrain, but it can also enable. In JA’s world (S&S), Elinor Dashwood has a mastery of that decorum that enables her to steer graciously through very troubled waters, most notably in the scene where she and Edward and Lucy meet with so much hidden.
In our world, we lack the grace and we lack the means of establishing the propriety in which graciousness can flourish.
