As I was driving to the store this morning ( this being the "biggest shopping day of the year" in the US), I was quite amused to recall that Jane Austen included scenes of Lydia and Kitty shopping regularly in Meryton for things they didn't want or need. Apparently silly women enjoy flirting and shopping! I would have thought that shopping for the sake of shopping was a far newer phenomenon.
