He proposed to her because he loved her. That is first and foremost. Whenever I read the first proposal, I'm like good start yeah. In vain have I struggled. But boy you certainly screw things up after that initial opening. Stupid boy!!!
His thinking she would never refuse him was arrogance on his side. He didn't know her well enough to know that she would have refused the King if he had put her down :)
