Well, JA wrote it that way, no doubt because it was what was expected in her time, but none the less she wrote it that way. As we are all here because me are avid JA fans and many of us love period pieces of any kind, we do find it odd at all, because we are used to the concept through our extensive readings. JA wrote it that way, and that's the way we are told the story when we read/watch it and so it's the way we think.
