I think that most of have noticed, but that we tend to read Jane Austen in the context of her time. Just as we are not outraged that her heroines had to marry in order to establish their place in society, we realize that the social milieu dictated how men and women were viewed. We don't necessarily think it was a good thing, but it's a little too late to rail against it.
