What an interesting question...my question to you is have you ever seen or read Little Women?(I'm not sure if it's in the book but it's definetly in the movie)The seen after Sally Mofat's(sp?) coming out party explains this very well I think. Jo asks why everyone talks about Meg but nobody talks about Laury and how he can flirt and such and noone thinks the less of him. And Marmie answers for one pratical reason, the same reason he can vote and hold property and persue any profession he pleases, because he is a man.
