I hope you won't regret asking the questiuon, Linda. ;-) Smiling does not preclude shyness but I think the act of smiling can indicate a certain level of sociability and social engagement. In this respect, I believe we're talking about Darcy smiling while in conversation.

I hope this ends your puzzlement. Maybe I should have said that Kate's comment suppports, rather than proves, my point.
