] ] I think they'll stay together because they'll be apart. They are not going to be a live together for ever conventional couple - and I think, given their characters, that this will suit them will. They will have, most of the time, the silence and pristiness of the "clean white sheets" but they will also have each other, not too far away. I like the fact that Byatt doesn't need to resolve them into a perfect conventional couple.

Seems to me that if ever there were two who could do the long-distance relationship thing successfully, it would be Roland and Maud.
