] P&P takes place in the days when modern medicine was still very much in its infancy. Jane Austen wrote before antihistamines, antibiotics, even codiene. If I am not mistaken, even asperin hadn't been perfected yet. They still bled patients.



Thanks Mark! I had just been thinking about that very thing the other morning after reading the section. Colds seem very minor now, but really they can be incredibly miserable, especially without any of the symptom-relieving medications that we take for granted. Just the headache or sniffles by themselves can be awful. And as for not moving her, they may have been paranoid about it turning into something like pneumonia.
