I never got the feeling that Darcy ever showed any interest in Caroline. They made snide remarks following the inital Meryton assembly (if she's a beauty her mother's a wit) and probably did so in the past. Darcy struck me as a very critical sort of man and Caroline shared this tendancy.

She made her remarks about Lizzie to prove he wasn't really interested in her, but she knew there was some danger there. Don't forget at Netherfield when she interrupts the sparring between L & D to play music. I think things were getting a little to hot for her!.
] Until her brother took the lease on Netherfield she probably thought she had the inside track for Darcys affections.

] This is, of course, supposing she believed that he wouldn't bow to pressure from Lady Catherine and marry her daughter.

] Her constant references (after the party at Lucas Lodge) to "fine eyes" appears IMHO to be attempts to decern if he has stopped admiring the person.

] Too bad for Caroline that she cannot see that all she is doing by her negative references is putting herself in the position of being put down by Darcy!
