In the days before antibiotics and modern medicine,people actually did die of trifling little colds. Or at least they died of trifling little colds that quickly mutated into life threatening conditions. I think Elizabeth was perfectly aware of the possibility that Jane's illness could turn serious without any warning- and wanted to be with her, not only for company, but to help ease (and insure as much as she could) her recovery.
