] I do agree that he pounces on Mary, but I think the remarks about Kitty's coughing are really him picking on his wife for complaining about something Kitty can't control. In his own sarcastic way he is sympathizing with Kitty for being the victim of Mrs. Bennet's nerves, but of course the only other person in the room who would understand this is Lizzy.

True, true, but Kitty didn't appreciate it much, did she.
