I agree! Perhaps JA provided these two relationships (Charlotte & Mr. Collins, Lydia & Wickham) to serve as the two extremes (social vs. sexual), which puts Elizabeth & Darcy's relationship (or eventual relationship) somewhere in the more desirable middle . . . with both partners intelligent and with a mutual regard and attraction/affection for each other which is, of course, ideal. I thinks it's just one more reason this story is timeless; there are relationships based solely on convenience and relationships based solely on attraction, yet the ideal most of us strive for/dream of is a combination of both. I like to think Lizzy & Darcy have it.
