] The Bulwer-Lytton competition notwithstanding, I don't think I have ever come across a better opening line than in P&P. It's also the line that causes the most trouble in the film adaptations - it's essential to the tone of the story, but there is almost no graceful way of turning it into dialogue, voice-over, etc.

If there is a list anywhere of the 10 best opening lines in western lit, this one had better be on it! The English teacher who introduced me to P&P by requiring this book also made us memorize that line--AND actually put it on the final ! :-) Thank you, Mr. Baker!
