JA's point may have been that Mary C's morals where shaky, unlike Lizzy, despite their similarity in personality, but I'm not convinced that it is morally right to ignore 'bad' behaviour in others; such 'obligation' can shore up the abuse of power.

I like the continuum idea, Aim. As you know, I'm of the mind that if JA is dogging anyone's morals in MP, it probably isn't Mary's. Rather, I think she's making some sort of commentary about the ROOT of one's morality. Crawford may be a pig, but he's a smart, perceptive pig (re: the whole Julia and Maria marriage thing...). Edmund and Fanny may be very good people, but they seem to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
