Period gothic novels

I'm new here and hope I am posting this question in the right place (It was between here and the Ramble).
I re-read Northanger Abbey a month or so ago, and overcome with a desire to read a "real" Gothic novel, I attempted to plough my way through Mrs. Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho. I tried this once before in college and failed miserably to get past the first few chapters. This time, while trying my d---dest, I couldn't even make it to the point where the heroine encounters the horrors behind the curtain, etc. despite my frequent skipping over long poetical descriptions and rapturous praise of the heroine's good character.
So, can anyone recommend a more readable Gothic novel from the period? Or will I just have to grit my teeth and make another attempt at Mrs. Radcliffe? If this has already been discussed ad nauseum, I apologize, and you can just refer me to the appropriate postings in archives.
