I have always felt that Miss Austen draws out the introduction of Lizzy for several important reasons. While captivating the reader with the teasing descriptions of the first few readers is an effective technique, the exposition of Elizabeth's character has a deeper meaning. Because Lizzy's personality is so much more complex than her sisters, mere words that describe her beauty are inadequate. To effectively present Lizzy takes longer than a character such as Jane, whose beauty and constant goodness define her.
