... and the very first thing I did was turn back to the beginning and read it again. Not because it was the best book I'd ever read, although I loved it, but because there were so many bits to tie up. Is it possible to get this book on a first reading (I mean just plot-wise, not necessarily all the layers)? I don't think it is, because she introduces so many details before you know that you need to take particular notice of them. The detail about May near the beginning for example - by the time you've worked out who she is and are really interested in her you've forgotten what was said - or maybe I'm just a bit of a skimmer. I think I can just about fit in a third reading before the book's due back at the library!
