I hadn't considered the brother in law. Nice pick-up, Hil. After all, Ash is "considerate" too. Of course, this is all in Ellen's opaque journal, and as Cassia points out, it is another Byatt exercise in knowing/not knowing. I think it may also have been meant to show that 1) Ellen was not unaware of sex and its consequences on an intimate level 2) Ditto marital infidelity 3) to alert clueless readers to the seriousness of unwed pregnancy in Victorian times 4) To show a bit of Ellen's cool detachment, at least in her journal. Is she really detached, or does she just write this way to veil over her real life and thoughts?
