I think Leonora does mention that when she is with someone for two long she feels shackled in some way to Maud when she first arrives at Maud's flat. I don't know if Byatt's means for Leonora relationship to be abusive since she tells us Leonora is capable of holding her own against him. The negation of the idea of female as lesser is part of what Leonora is formed of. She is a big, strong, physically capable woman. She might be offended it we thought her abused rather than the two of them just having physical fights.
