In light of the discussion here some time ago about Charlotte Bronte's obsession with the shape of people's faces, did anyone notice early in Chapter 15 (p 298 in mine) that there is a description of Ash in those terms?
He was "well endowed with the bumps of compassion and fellow feeling".
In fact, on rereading, the whole chapter has the feel of something that might have been written in the 19C.
