] Does anyone have any thoughts on Leonora or Dr Nest?
I think I actually like Leonora. She's so larger than life, literally and figuratively, and she doesn't let her largeness diminish her sexuality - the metaphors that come to mind are of generosity, plenitude, lushness and fecundity...
Sure she's opinionated, and dominating, and takes over Maud's personal space. But she's also a romantic, excited by the idea of Maud having a secret lover, and seems to forgive Maud her deception surprisingly easily, a deception that in academic terms amounts to a serious crime.
When I first read the book, I think I reacted badly to her, because of the potential threat she posed to the Roland/Maud relationship. But now I just enjoy her presence and relish her over the top pronouncements. I always chuckle when she propositions Blackadder - its such a Leonora thing, and in many ways, a truly generous offer!
