Byatt uses classic supense film technique when she does this. We follow R and M and suddenly we are a head of them (think NxNW). Yes, she is a puppetmaster but the story has grown it legs and is leading her also. There is so much more commentary in this part of the novel so we don't dash along, forgetting to pick up the clues.
