By some stroke of luck or coincidence, there was a reading of Lovers' Vows on at the public library this weekend along with readings of relevant passages from MP!
Although Lovers' Vows is dreadful drivel, it is amazing how the roles everyone takes are so like their own situations, motivations, etc. Even the Frederick character played by Henry is actually the brother of the Ameila character played by Mary.
What I'm wondering as this--sorry if the question is too obvious--did JA write her characters specifically to parallel the Lovers' Vows roles? It seems too much a coincidence that she could have thought up all the characters and her plot and then found a play where the roles matched so exactly--right down to Edmund's role of Anhalt being a clergyman.
