] ] I feel ambivalent about Chasing Amy. I liked aspects of it - but not others. And one of my freinds, who's a lesbian, really didn't like it - and having discussed it with her I can see why.
I don't recall discussing it with her in detail, but I got the impression that she thought it depicted lesbianism as something you choose to do until the right man comes along and "cures" you of it. I think she thought that if the female character was described as a bisexual, someone who is attracted to people of both sexes, then that would be ok. But I think in this case she thought it made lesbianism out to be a second best option, which, from the point of view of a committed lesbian, it certainly was not.
Unfortunately she's gone back to Australia, so I can't ask her for a more detailed analysis. My interest in this has been picqued, so I might ask a couple of my other lesbian acquaintances what they thought of the movie.
