] I feel ambivalent about Chasing Amy. I liked aspects of it - but not others. And one of my freinds, who's a lesbian, really didn't like it - and having discussed it with her I can see why.

When I said I like Chasing Amy, it was because the acting was very good (whatever the lead actress' name is) and the dialogue was excellent, intelligently written. I think Kevin Smith (?) is very talented and I've enjoyed the two movies of his that I've seen. When the plot turned to the subject of her choice between her lesbian relationships and one with him, I was expecting the usual, trite kinds of views that prevail in most men's minds, you know, that "she never really had a good man before," etc. But I was pleasantly surprised by what she said. She had lived in both worlds. She had made an intelligent decision based on real feelings. It had nothing to do with being male or female. It had to do with the person himself or herself. Had she gone back to being heterosexual for good? Well, her lesbian friends were disowning her; they couldn't understand her perspective and now showed that they didn't understand her motivations as well. Who knows?
