In response to Haven't seen 'Chasing Amy' but..., written by Hil on October 30, 1997 at 22:15:47
] ] ] Have you seen a film called Chasing Amy. One of the things discussed is the feeling that some people feel that lesbian sex is not real sex because there is no penetration. I'm not accusing Ash of that kind of thinking but I do think that is how Blanche thought. Remember, when she goes to Ellen she emphasises that her relationship with Christabel is innocent. IMHO, she feels it is more to do with love than the 'animalistic acts' of sex.

] ] Oh, yes I saw Chasing Amy and loved it. I even liked how convincingly she explained her switcheroo without it being insulting and neanderthalic (is that a word?) Is Christabel is the same boat? Having sampled everything on the platter, she finds real love (or is it just sex) with Ash and so ends her lesbian relationship with Blanche.
] ] I tend to be in the camp that says this feminist/lesbian thing was included to make fun of certain trends in literary scholarship. All the hints are there--I will concede--but at the same time, the Victorian hangup over sex precluded her having a relationship with Blanche. Am I naive? Maybe. Christabel was independent and she didn't need anyone. Blanche was a useful foil for her, shockingly sharing a household together.

] I agree with Kate that there are definite indications that there is a sexual relationship between C and B. I've always understood (maybe wrongly?) that it has always been more acceptable for women to live together in a sexual relationship (admittedly often hidden), than it has been for gay men. Isn't their attempt to be financially and emotionally independent from the wider world the shocking and difficult aspect of C and B's relationship, not their lesbianism?
I agree Hil. In any case, lesbianism was so little known that no one respectable would have suspected it of them.
I feel ambivalent about Chasing Amy. I liked aspects of it - but not others. And one of my freinds, who's a lesbian, really didn't like it - and having discussed it with her I can see why.
