] Proposal: love is an act of the will, to some extent. And human beings are social creatures who are always inventing and re-inventing themselves. If our society gives us a construct of romantic love, it will be easier for us to fall in with it. If our society tells us there is nothing but sex, some of us will fall for that as the truth and become poor truncated beings who are unable to love.
Love is an act of will, yet, but I believe it is a biological necessity as well. When I was working on my sketches for a production of Arcadia I read many essays, books and articles on hermits. Being alone seems to drive humans mad. The chemical make up of the blood and other body tissues change in a person too long alone. Some think this is why the madness decends. Sex, in any form doesn't change the blood chemistry back to normal but caressing and hugging do work. When we ignore the needs of our social side we starve the individual(sp?).
