I think I'm going to follow this image of light a little more. When Roland and Maud go back to Seal Court to read the Letters, Roland is returning to his room in a "corridor [that] is badly lit." He is thinking to himself "There was an automatic wariness in her look that he found offensive." He doesn't like her...no love here!! And then he waits to use the bathroom.
When she emerges, all wet with golden hair, he receives his "kick galvanic." The big shock!! "Did she emit the electric shock...or did she also feel it? His body knew perfectly well that she felt it. He did not trust his body." This is not going to be passion or lust.
He says, "I was looking if there was a light."
"This whole thing appeared in this half-light..."
Roland is half way into the development of his deep, true love for Maud.
