Well, I'm with Cassia.

And I refuse to believe that Possession is a middle-brow novel. Huh-uh; the writing level, the depth of the symbolism, the complexity of the construction, all are against that conclusion.

] ] How could love become to weak an element to drive a novel? Does this mean that our hearts no longer matter?

Proposal: love is an act of the will, to some extent. And human beings are social creatures who are always inventing and re-inventing themselves. If our society gives us a construct of romantic love, it will be easier for us to fall in with it. If our society tells us there is nothing but sex, some of us will fall for that as the truth and become poor truncated beings who are unable to love.
