There's actually a clue about Ellen's problem in her diary, where she's talking about Bertha. She recalls that when she was young, her mother had beaten a servant for getting pregnant. "I shall never forget the screaming" she writes.

For someone who's knowledge about sex (presumably, if she was typical of well brought up Victorian girls, extremely limited in any case) was shaped by this kind of reaction to the consequences, it's no wonder she had some problems.
