I find it quite ironic, in the context of our (and Roland and Maud's)discussion of how we don't like the fact that everything relates to sex, that this is in fact the key to the Ellen/Ash relationship, and to her "baffling" diary.

Beatrice herself, knowing that Ellen is "baffling" her, refuses to believe that the systematic omission which she is beginning to see relates to "that kind of thing" (ie sex, as Leonora wanted to prove). And yet in this case it did... So Byatt is not totally rejecting the idea that Freud can be important.
