I'm reading the poems carefully this time.

It's fascinating how Byatt has woven into this poem connections to the correspondence which Ash we involved in while he was writing it. These are some that I found.

Six lines in there is the use of the metaphor of an egg. On the following page (in my edition page 222) theres a reference to a woman who encouraged Swammerdam to think again about his religious faith. Then towards the end there are several references to curiosity about the natural world, and the fact that God seems to have endowed humans with a need to KNOW. In Ash's letter about his religious faith he makes much of the point that God created humans with curiosity...
