Yes, my Browning research is turning up all sorts of tantalizing tidbits, I really should organize them in some way.

Browning wrote a two-volume book of love poetry called "Men and Women." It consists of 51 poems. Maybe that's why Byatt didn't attempt to write one.

The book contains a dedication called "One Word More: To EBB," in which he expresses his regret that he has not been able to emulate Raphael and Dante whose entire lives and works were dedicated to worshiping the women they loved.

Just another possibility.
