In response to some thoughts about the letters, and a few questions. And no spoilers, written by Kate on October 29, 1997 at 07:04:05

] Also, does anyone know what "while this machine is to me" means?

It's a quote from Hamlet. Hamlet writes a letter to Ophelia which is read aloud by someone (Polonius?) and the closing is, "Yours, while this machine is to him, Hamlet." He means "as long as I have this body."

Does Byatt ever give the meaning of "Ask and Embla?" If not can supply. (Boy, do you suppose a thoroughly annotated edition of Possession will ever come forth? I could learn a lot!)
