It's a quote from Hamlet. Hamlet writes a letter to Ophelia which is read aloud by someone (Polonius?) and the closing is, "Yours, while this machine is to him, Hamlet." He means "as long as I have this body."
Does Byatt ever give the meaning of "Ask and Embla?" If not can supply. (Boy, do you suppose a thoroughly annotated edition of Possession will ever come forth? I could learn a lot!)
