In response to Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, written by Caroline on October 21, 1997 at 10:58:37

"Cranford" is a delightful book, and I especially enjoy the way it gives you a look at society next-door to that treated by Austen or Bronte, (mostly women, in a small-scale English setting) but treated in a different way.

I say "next-door" because Austen's society is a higher society. More of these women live on the level of a Miss Bates.

Also you get a look into the mind of Charlotte Bronte's friend and biographer...
