Her brother or another relative had to take her in, and in
that situation I would be upset and hard pressed not to
have extreme negative feelings. (personally those feelings
would be expressed!!) What do you think?
I KNOW I would have negative feelings, not to mention
feelings of real vulnerability. I'm sure I'd want to make
snide or witty references to the matter, too, and would,
unless I had just happened to argue against such behavior
on the Pemberley site! It's funny, but when I first posted
on this subject my idea was not so much to condemn Mary,
but to defend Fanny and Edmund from the charge of hypocrisy
(and to say that Mary's conduct wasn't necessarily
praiseworthily open). I think I may have ended up taking an
absolutist position unintentionally. Such are the hazards
of discussion.
