Thank you so much for all this wonderful research. My Eng Lit education is weaker than I thought, and you've really increased my admiration for Byatt's density and complexity.

I was thinking about Christabel's egg riddle yesterday, and saw another color analogy: the golden yolk and white of the egg and the gold-and-white color of both C. and Maud.

BTW, did you read Angels and Insects? There, the white-skinned characters are decadent, not magical.
